What makes music “real?”
Hi! It’s Charluxx.
A few days ago two acquaintances who shall remain nameless (thanks... Marc et Ian!) said I should play “real” music with them, not “computer” music.
I thought that was rather condescending...
If the “computer” doesn’t make it “real,” stop listening to music. Because all music ends up in the “computer” before you hear it.
I, for one, am so frickin’ glad the “computer” makes it possible.
The reason it did not work for me the first time out is because I was poor, and I could never have afforded to rent a studio and record.
Now I can record singles and albums, at home! Sure I mix and master it at a studio (all my money goes there), but I record everything at home. With my “real” guitar, my “real“ bass, my “real” keyboard, and my “real” voice. So what if I pre-mix it in the “computer” and create some cool sounds and effects? That’s my sound!
I could never have done it any other way. So my music isn’t as “real” as a consequence?
How about the message I voice, the catchy melodies, the groovy basslines, the funky guitar playing, the shear range of my voice, the diversity of my style from one song to the next? Not “real?”
What makes “computer” music less “real?”
A kid repeating a note on a laptop and singing a made up song, is that not “real” music (because he’s not a professional?)
Having a musical talent, expressing it electronically, and making millions of dollars a year while at it isn’t “real?”
Well let me tell you it's as real as can be baby... Not any different that banging rocks together and signing along.
Plus, for someone (me) whose sound is so new and is such a perfectionist that he (me again) prefers to compose alone, that kind of makes the “computer” the only “real” option.
I’ll find my dream team of players and artists, I’ll find my like minded tribe. I’m inching towards putting together a live Sexy Funk band complete with horns, dancers, costumes, light show... because that’s my sound too!
Will my music finally be “real” then?
I love my “computer” damnit, it allows me to be at my funkiest best! It allows me to bring out the Sexy Funk.
If you think my music isn’t “real” music, I dare you to relax, play it LOUD, and not groove to it!
Peace and Love,
Charluxx.
p.s.: communicate people! Let's get it on...
