Songs tell stories
Stories are how we explain the world. That is what we do as human beings. Ever since the early dawn.
Observe the world around you: all animals communicate in songs.
Furthermore, if you think of songs as movies, you can imagine lyrics are screenplays.
Songs provide the soundtrack to our lives. Hearing a familiar song will instantly locate you in a time and place that has a specific meaning to you. It is a powerful and personal reaction, a very primal one at that.
Yes, songs tell stories... but due to their abbreviated form (they are not a 90 minutes movie, or a book) they function more like poetry and that leaves them even more open to interpretation. Not a bad thing mind you. Like any story, listening to a song conjures up images. Those are unique to you. But to me...
I often wonder what a song means. Sometimes I'd like to know more, be a fly on the wall of the artist's mind, find out what they were thinking, why they wrote it, how it made them feel, what they were trying to say... did they succeed in their choice of imagery?
This section is an open book on my thought processes, how the song came to me, what It really means. If that kills the magic for you: don't read. If it answers questions: do read on.
Musically, you can find out how each song came together in the Music Analysis section...
